  • Happy birthday to a very special lady!

We are very excited that one of our special local customers has just celebrated her 85th birthday!

Grasmere resident, Mary Bower, is without doubt our favourite 'octogenarian' and we wish her our hearty congratulations!

Over the years', Mary has supplied us with some delicious cakes and has always been on hand as a great supporter to us all.  She was in fact, one of our esteemed judges in our 'Young Bakers Initiative'.

Many happy returns Mary, and thank you!

  • Grasmere's children hold 'come dine with me' event at Green's!

The children from years 5 & 6 at Grasmere School held a 'Come Dine with me' event at the café yesterday to demonstrate their culinary and preparation skills.  A number of sessions at the café culminated in a special lunch for parents and community members, at which the children prepared, cooked and served.

On the menu was vegetable soup, herdwick lamb shepherds pie (vegetarian available) served with vegetables, and apple pie served with ice cream.  In addition to laying the place settings, folding napkins, writing menu's, cooking and serving, the children also provided 'entertainment' for their guests prior to the dessert course!

"This is one of the best things we have ever done." says Grasmere School's Headmistress, Jo Goode.  "The children have learnt a range of different skills such as the scientific and nutritional element of food groups, maths and social skills.  We invited a number of people who help us out at the school in different ways and wanted to say thank-you to them.  We also owe a big thank-you to Karen and Rob at Green's who have given up their time for this wonderful initiative."

  • The 'Young Baker's Initiative' over-14's final reveals a winner!

Thursday night saw a winner in our over-14's final of the 'Young Baker's Initiative'!

15 year old Diana Lumumba created a Kenyan cardamom and coconut donut with coconut cream, which the judges declared the winner.

Diana, who enjoys cooking at home, took her inspiration for the winning dish from her Mother, who bakes a lot of Kenyan food.

Competing against Diana, Gracie Wainwright, 16, also wowed the judges with her chocolate and mint cupcakes.

Diana and Gracie's delicious cakes will soon be on sale at Green's, with proceeds from Gracie's cakes contributing to her charity trip to Vietnam in August 2015.

    Many congratulations to them both!
