  • Homemade Shepherd’s Pie For All Diets

Here at Greens, we believe everyone should enjoy local, seasonal, comfort food regardless of their diet. Offering a range of unique dishes, we cater for a number of dietary requirements such as vegan, vegetarian, dairy – free, gluten – free and coeliac.

Our customers love our homemade shepherd’s pie, local fell bread lamb, topped with cheesy mash and served with fresh vegetables. We make it ourselves gluten-free, but for those who require dairy free we can leave out the butter in the mash and substitute with sunflower spread and replace the cheese on the top with vegan cheese. We also make a vegetarian version with a three-bean stew which is gluten-free and can be made vegan by using the sunflower spread and soya milk in the mash and vegan cheese on the top. All versions are served with either a freshly made salad or fresh vegetables prepared and cooked by us.

  • An insight into Hunters Gluten Free Puddings

One of our most popular desserts here at Greens is Hunters gluten – free sticky toffee pudding from Hunter’s Puddings. Created by Sarah Hunter in her own kitchen her gluten free puddings have won numerous awards such as ‘Cumbria Life’ magazines Best Pudding / dessert 20111/2012 and ‘delicious’ Magazines Best Gluten - free Sticky Toffee Pudding. Since starting the business in 2006 the gluten - free market has changed with more choices for those with a gluten - free diet.

Our social media guru, Holly Goddard contacted Sarah Hunter to find out more.

When did you start making your gluten free puddings?

“Through my 20s whenever my friends and I got together for dinner we would each provide a course. I've always had a sweet tooth so I always bagged the dessert!”

What is the process involved in making your puddings, is there a particular process involved?

“We bake our puddings just as you would at home. We use specialist gluten free flour but apart from that we bake just as our grannies did! Nothing weird, just good quality, natural ingredients.”

    Hunters Sticky Toffee Pudding

What do you enjoy most about making your puddings?

“I've always enjoyed the creative process. When I was a child I was fascinated by how ingredients like butter, egg and flour, quite unappetising on their own, could be conjured into an amazing cake or dessert. That fascination continues to this day. I think the chemistry of it is just amazing.”

Out of all your puddings which one is your favourite?

“I couldn't choose one, that would be like choosing a favourite child! I think they all have their own attributes. I love going to Coeliac Fayres where we have the full range set up for tastings. Customers go from one to the next, oohing and aahing, comparing notes with their friends (and sometimes complete strangers!) deciding on which they like best. There's never an overall winner. Different puddings appeal to different people.”

Selection of Hunters Gluten - Free Puddings

Has the business changed at all and is there anything exciting happening?

“The business is forever changing and evolving, and the gluten free market has changed beyond recognition from when we first started back in 2006. In September we started working with a new wholesaler based near Reading. This is enabling us to supply many of the independent delis and farm shops in the South of England - an area we've had very little coverage in until now. Already they are opening us up to a whole range of stockists - big and small - who are new to us so that's very exciting!”

  • More of us our choosing Vegan

More and more of us are choosing to go vegan which we have noticed here at Greens. Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals. A follower of either the diet or the philosophy is known as a vegan.

Over the years there has been a rise in people choosing to go Vegan. The most recent survey conducted in the UK found that over 542,000 people are following a vegan diet, an increase of more than 3.5 times the number of vegans over the past decade, making Veganism one of Britain's fastest growing lifestyle movements. The rise in Veganism is due to more young people making more compassionate and ethical life choices. More and more big eating chains are offering more vegan options as well as abstaining from using animal products in their foods.

Studies have shown that choosing a vegan diet can also benefit your health. Whole vegan diets are generally higher in certain nutrients providing more fibre, antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds. They have a tendency to reduce your calorie intake, making them effective in promoting weight loss. The diet reduces the risks of developing certain health problems such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and heart disease. If you suffer from arthritis studies have shown that vegan diets based on probiotic-rich whole foods can significantly decrease symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. As well as reducing the risks of certain diseases a vegan diet can reduce the onset of a migraine.

Here at Greens, we have seen a rise in customers asking for vegan dishes. Our philosophy is that anyone can enjoy vegan food, so we take pride in ensuring our vegan offering is delicious and tasty. If its breakfast and scrambled tofu, or a full-on main meal of toad out of the hole complete with vegan yorkies, or just a snack or lovely vegan ice cream sundae you're after  Green's is the place to go in Grasmere. Aga makes delicious vegan meringues that mere mortals think are the real thing!

  • Easter Events in Grasmere!

    It's Easter time!

It's that time of year again when the Easter bunny comes out to play, chocolate eggs cover supermarket shelves and kids have two weeks off from school! Whatever will you do to entertain them? Here are a couple of things happening in Grasmere:

    Easter Crafts

    Crafts at Allan Bank

As they do every year, Allan Bank of the National Trust will be running Craft workshops every single day 10am-4pm from April 1st until April 23rd! This is completely free other than the usual admission fees for the venue itself and is a guaranteed great day of fun for the little ones.

    Easter Egg Hunt

    Allan Bank Cadbury Egg Hunt

Another really exciting event being held at the Allan Bank National Trust venue is an egg hunt. All around their Red Squirrel's trail are hidden eggs which you'll have to find - if all of them are found then there will be a yummy chocolate prize waiting at the end! This event costs £2 per person and will be running on the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th April from 10:30 am until 4:00 pm! This should be great fun for everyone involved and the weather for that weekend should be superb as well!

    Easter Treats at Green's Cafe

So after a long, hard day of making beautiful crafts at Allan Bank, or searching high and low for eggs, why not pop into Green's Cafe to refuel? As always, we'll have a special cake for the occasion which hasn't been decided yet - this is a picture of last years tasty creation! As well as that, we have a great children's menu which you can have a look at here and we'll be running a specials menu especially for the holidays, so keep your eyes peeled for when we post it!

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you've any further questions and if you're a larger group then we'd recommend giving us a ring on 015394 35790 to book to avoid any disappointment! We look forward to seeing you!

  • Fairtrade Fortnight

    It's Fairtrade Fortnight!

Once a year, for two weeks (Monday 27 February - Sunday 12 March), Fairtrade Foundation organises the promotional campaign that is 'Fairtrade Fortnight'. Campaigners, businesses and schools get together to raise better awareness of the Fairtrade movement and what it's all about.

Behind every bar of chocolate, mug of coffee and pot of tea (to name but a few) are the farmers and workers who are working to improve their lives and communities. When you buy products with the Fairtrade mark, you support these people. To learn more about exactly who is behind your favourite cup of tea, click here.

Here at Green's, we believe in supporting these farmers and workers that work so hard to make their living. We use Fairtrade chocolate to make our yummy chocolate brownies, Fairtrade coffee beans from Farrer's in Kendal and make our delicious Herdy's hot chocolates using only Fairtrade ingredients. Why not pop in today and ask for something Fairtrade?

Let's get together to support these workers. Why not try to only buy Fairtrade products for this fortnight? It's a simple change to make; just think of the good you'll be doing and how this can change these worker's lives!

We hope to see you soon!
